Security Assistant, Grade S2, Colombo

About the role

The British High Commission in Colombo is recruiting a Security Assistant (Grade S2) to help protect the occupants and property of the High Commission and safeguard the physical security of the mission. The post is full-time, fixed term for 24 months, with 12-hour shifts covering 48 hours per week (two night and two day shifts), starting tentatively on 1 January 2026. It is reported as a single vacancy.

Key responsibilities

• Protect the High Commission buildings, including residences, and the property within the compounds, and safeguard staff and visitors from risk
• Maintain access control at the main and EU gates, Westminster House, Trenchard House and Defence Advisers compounds
• Carry out day and night security patrols, keeping routes clear and maintaining a detailed security log
• Provide fire watch, raise and lower flags, screen incoming mail and ensure CCTV and security lighting are operational
• Supervise contractors out of hours, liaise with visitors and staff, and cover the Supervisor's role when absent
• Operate VHF radios, maintain security equipment and report incidents and faults
• Take part in mandatory monthly security training and complete online and offline training

Required profile

• At least 2 years' experience in a similar security role, preferably in a diplomatic mission or the corporate sector
• G.C.E Advanced level minimum qualification
• English spoken and written at IELTS 5 or upper-intermediate level (assessment required); Sinhala and/or Tamil at intermediate level
• Valid normal driver's licence with good driving record (desirable)
• Physical fitness for frequent patrolling and rounds

• Ability to stay awake and vigilant throughout a shift

What we offer

• Starting salary of LKR 147,345 per month plus EPF 12% and ETF 3%
• 13 months' salary (pro-rated) and medical insurance coverage
