Finance Intern

About the role

The International Water Management Institute (IWMI), a CGIAR Research Center, is looking for enthusiastic students to join its finance department in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The internship gives a broad understanding of accounting procedures and processes in an international organization, with work in an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system and interaction with staff at the headquarters and in regional offices across Asia and Africa.

Key responsibilities

• Record and process financial transactions in the ERP system, including journal vouchers, payment vouchers, receipts and other entries.
• Process supplier invoices and create payables in the ERP where applicable.
• Prepare journal vouchers for manual expense claims, medical claims and other finance transactions.
• Handle petty cash and keep accurate petty cash records.
• Prepare fund transfer vouchers, bank transfer letters and related payment documentation.
• Assist with cheque payments and other payment processing.
• Assist with hosted institute invoicing and other finance-related billing.
• Update bank charges from bank statements and help with credit card and other financial reconciliations.
• Ensure supporting documents are complete and accurate and keep finance records properly filed.

Required profile

• Undergraduate or recent graduate with a Bachelor of Commerce or Accounting degree, or a registered or part-qualified student of CA Sri Lanka, CIMA, AAT or ACCA.
• Excellent written and spoken English.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel and Word; accounting software experience is an added advantage.
• Integrity is of utmost importance.
• Nationally recruited: only Sri Lankan citizens can apply.

What we offer

• A monthly stipend during the internship.
• An initial 6-month contract, with possible extension for another 6 months depending on performance, needs and available funds.
