Lifeguard

About the role

The Lifeguard position is a full‑time, on‑site role at MSTI Maritime Academy in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka. The successful candidate will ensure the safety of trainees and staff in swimming areas and training pools, responding swiftly to any emergency situation.

Key responsibilities

• Monitor swimming areas and training pools, maintaining constant vigilance over trainees and staff.
• Perform water rescues, administer first aid and CPR, and respond quickly to emergencies.
• Enforce safety rules and academy protocols, conducting regular checks of lifesaving equipment.
• Keep pool decks, surrounding areas and facilities clean and free of hazards.
• Participate in safety briefings and support maritime safety training sessions.
• Collaborate with instructors to promote a culture of safety and risk awareness throughout the academy.

Required profile

• Strong swimming proficiency and demonstrated water‑safety skills.
• Valid lifeguard certification from a recognized authority, with current first‑aid and CPR certification.
• Knowledge of emergency‑response procedures and experience monitoring high‑risk environments.
• Clear communication skills for giving instructions and coordinating with instructors and trainees.
• High attention to detail, situational awareness and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
• Physical fitness sufficient for sustained vigilance, rapid response and manual handling during rescues.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a diverse training environment and maintain a professional, respectful approach.
• Prior experience as a lifeguard, safety officer, or in maritime or aquatic training environments is an advantage.
