Medical Officer In Charge – Accident & Emergency Department

About the role

The In‑charge Medical Officer will lead the Accident and Emergency (A&E) Department, ensuring high‑quality, timely emergency care while managing day‑to‑day clinical and administrative operations.

Key responsibilities

• Provide expert clinical care and supervise rapid assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of acute and trauma cases.
• Oversee daily department operations, staffing, shift schedules, and 24/7 emergency coverage.
• Supervise junior doctors, nurses, paramedics and identify training needs.
• Ensure compliance with hospital policies, national health regulations, and international emergency care standards.
• Coordinate with ambulance services, police, disaster response teams, and other hospital departments.
• Identify revenue opportunities, develop proposals for service expansion, and promote A&E services.

Required profile

• MBBS or equivalent medical degree.
• Full registration with the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC).
• Minimum 8 years of clinical experience, including at least 2 years in A&E or critical care.
• Proven experience in emergency patient management, triage, resuscitation and acute care.
• Current BLS and ACLS certification; ATLS certification is an advantage.
